Bog Oak Man wrought with consumate skill from one of the world's most ancient materials. This powerful bog oak sculpture is a dramatic fusion of Celtic myth and elemental craftsmanship. Entitled 'Nin the old man of the bog', sculpture Kevin Doyles unique one off work, conjures up an archetypal druid from the near-retified wood that was buried in the bog of Allen (where legendary Celtic Shaulans practiced their sorcery) some 5000 years ago.
Radiocarbon dating at Queen's university, Belfast confirms: "In providing dates along with sculptured wood, you can safely say, in the case of bog yew, that the date of the growth of the wood is between 2000 and 2200 BC and for the bog oak, the date of growth of the wood is between 3300 and 3600 BC."
Dr. F. G. Cormack, radiocarbon Research Unit.
5000 years old bog - carved by the bog - modelled by man
It's the ancient nature of the timber that intrigues and confuses... a 5000 year-old wood buried and preserved in the extensive bog-land of Ireland. Some of these ancient trees died due to climate changes, others due to the farming techniques of our stone age ancestors. Thousands of years later, they re-appear due to turf-cutting, land drainage and occasionally, tidal action.
